About Collective

An animation of markings in white, morphing into other markings on a starry background.

Curious Markings Collective is one of many experiments we are conducting. It is a place for people to translate our markings in their own words. Utilizing the Oxford Dictionary API, we seek to expose a "natural" language within ourselves. Typographic forms that are universal to human understanding. The results may be extremely profound, or they may lead nowhere.

Instructions

When translating a marking, use the first word(s) that come to mind. Try not to think too hard about what the marking resembles. Try to think intuitively. For example, a marking could look like a sprinting gazelle, but the first word that came to mind was "basket." In this case, opt to use the word "basket" instead of "sprint" or "gazelle."

To translate markings, you need to sign up. Signing up is free, and I don't send marketing emails without consent.

Additional Info

Multiple Words

Multiple words are absolutely allowed when translating markings. Feel free to use as many as necessary. Alternatively, one words is fine as well.

How to translate

You are giving your interpretation of the marking based on your intuition – your gut reaction from looking at the marking. If you're spending more than 10 seconds thinking of a word, you're trying too hard. It's not bad if you do take that long, but any more than that runs the risk of personal biases influencing your translation.

Timeline

The results of this experiment will be published as soon as enough data is gathered. It may happen in a few months, or it may take several years. It all depends on how quickly we can get people to participate.
